Can Dictomate record phone calls?

The answer here is yes and no this may not seem like a straight forward answer but I'll explain why. Android devices have a number of audio sources for capturing Audio, here's what Dictomate supports

  • Mic – This is usually the default microphone of the device, used for capturing your voice on a phone call.
  • Camcorder Mic – This microphone is used when shooting video, used for capturing more ambient sounds e.g. sounds that are further away from the device.
  • Phone Call – This is the audio source for the audio up_link and down_link of a phone call. In other words this is the audio source that captures both sides of the conversation when talking on the phone.

For recording good quality phone conversation the “Phone Call” audio source is the one that is required. The problem is, not all Android devices support this audio source. Dictomate will automatically check and only display the audio sources that are compatible with the device it's running on.

If your Android device does not support the “Phone Call” audio source there is still another option. An alternative way of recording a phone conversation is to use the “Camcorder Mic” and set your Android device to use speaker phone. This records both sides of the conversation by using the devices loud speaker to be picked up by the “Camcorder Mic”.

NOTE: Please check your local law requirements before recording phone calls. It is a criminal offence to record phone calls, in some countries, if certain conditions are not met.
